I think you are thinking of Mark Serreze, senior scientist at the government's snow and ice data center in Boulder, Colorado. He predicted that the Arctic would be ice-free by 2012.

Cool Great Lakes site.

http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/

Looks like Superior hasn't been above normal this year and current water temp is well below previous years.

Can't find extreme for it so not sure if it's a record or not.

Arctic sea ice is still below average.

Global sea ice (Arctic + Antarctic) is above average though.

What the heck is going on in the Antarctica? How long can it keep setting records for? It's just off the charts now. New Modern Era record of Ice. Too bad we don't have data prior to Satellites.

And the Arctic had very little volume loss during melt season this year.. It's the 2nd least amount of melt area on record this year. 1996 was first.

Wind is a huge factor in determining sea ice extent. I'd guess that it's been a very calm year down south.

The Average Temp is below normal in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes except Erie (at normal).

What the heck is going on with Superior. Wow to the drop this month! ..

Vs normal on left, Vs previous yrs on right.

http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/web...statistic.html

Normal for September 17 is 14°C. It’s at 9.8°C. Its well below normal closer to Mid October Normals. Note its colder than prev yrs at this time as well.. Maybe close to record for September? I can't find daily data on it
