A ridiculously cold month, the coldest October I have personally recorded by far. First October snowfall witnessed since 2000, which left a covering on the grass, cars and roofs in the late hours of the 26th and early hours of the 27th. No air frost this month, but multiple ground frosts.

No thunder whatsoever, no convection whatsoever. Sunnier than average, pretty average rainfall amounts.

Max temp in October 2011 was 28.3C, this year, it was just 15.6C. What a difference!

Aside from the hurricane, it was a pretty average October. I'll give it a C-. Would have been nicer if it had been just a bit sunnier.

Max: 82 F / 27.8 C (5th)
Min: 33 F / 0.5 C (13th)
Average high 66 F / 18.9 C, low 49 F / 9.5 C

Pretty crappy month in general. Too many cloudy days (actually, we're on a streak of 9 sunless days in a row at the moment and counting), and only a few warm days. Oh and of course Sandy put the nail in the coffin at the end of the month. Without Sandy I'd probably give it a 4/10. Hopefully it's sunnier next month.

Perth Weather: October 2012
We had our 2nd warmest October in 119 years of record, and another month with rainfall much below average. The January-October rainfall total is the 6th driest such period on record. Had one interesting thunderstorm, otherwise a forgettable October. I rate the month a 4/10.

Mean minimum: 12.5C / 55F (+1.2C)

Highest maximum: 36.2C / 97F (28th)

Highest daily rainfall: 4.4mm / 0.17"

Hmm, NOAA adjusted values for the year are higher than the preliminary values I recorded. May's high is 2.2F higher, June 1.9F higher and July is 1.0F. Lows are higher too. Tinfoil, anyone?

Not a bad month. A great start to fall, and for once we had a below average month. 81-10 avg Oct is 52.1F, this Oct's avg is 50.8F. The first recorded snowfall was on the 29th.

NOAA adjusted highs for the year:

Precipitation total is provisional as it is still raining here but it won't be too far from that total.

The first eleven days were bone dry and very warm during the day with a few windy days. Here is a summary of the first eleven days of October:
Average high: 75.0F
Average low: 37.5F
Maximum temperature: 83F
Minimum temperature: 32F
Min High: 70F
Max low: 49F
Precipitation: 0.00"

Now for a full October summary:
Average high: 65.9F
Average low: 43.9F
Maximum temperature: 83F
Minimum temperature: 32F
Min High: 51F
Max low: 59F
Precipitation: 4.19"
Thunder days: 0 observed although there was a lot of instability in the atmosphere.
Highest diurnal range: 46F degrees (78F/32F)
Lowest diurnal range: 6F degrees (56F/50F)

October 12th (0.51") was the first day since June 30th to record more than 0.08" of rain. The greatest 24 hour rainfall of October occurred on the 15th where 1.38" fell.

The high temp on the 11th was 70F and the high on the 12th was 56F, so quite a big change from the extended summer weather.

The coldest and gloomiest period was the 20th through the 25th, due to an air mass from the Gulf of Alaska and western Canada.

Overall a very dynamic and interesting month so I give it a solid B.

The first few days of November will be flirting with highs around 70F, which usually means a significant cold snap later in the month.

Average max: 28.6C/83.5F
Average min: 11.5C/52.7F
Mean: 20.05C/68.1F

Highest max: 36.5C/97.7F
Lowest max: 16.7C/62.1F
Highest min: 16.9C/62.4F
Lowest min: 3.7C/38.7F

Rainfall: 46.8mm/1.9"
Days of rain (>=1mm): 4

Strongest wind gust: 83km/h

Average 9am humidity: 48%
Average 3pm humidity: 26%

You can see the daily data here: Dalby, Qld - October 2012 - Daily Weather Observations

This October featured highly variable temperatures, at least by my standards, with 3 days exceeding 35C, and 3 days failing to reach 20C. The rainfall was about 11mm below average, making it the fourth month in a row with below average rainfall. The humidity was significantly below average as well, which resulted in the diurnal range being higher than normal.

My rating for the month is 3/10. It could have been worse, but it was still too dry for my liking. The 11th was a good day though, with nearly 40mm of rain and a couple of nice thunderstorms.
