Here in London where I live -7C would be only 3C above the record low. Anyway 0C to 3C days would do it for me. But its funny because we already had an ice day (Fog during December 2012) but that feels such a long time ago.

Well the record low is something like -19c here so um -7c isnt that bad. But its a nice hard frost.

To me an ice day under fog is not the same as a cool -2c day under sunshine.

For YOU -7C isn't bad. The coldest temperature I experienced was -9C near Sheffield. Fog and low temperatures is horrible, but ice days and sunshine is just cold but pleasent in a weird way.

Wow! -9c? I thought that london got really cold under easterly flows? I read somewhere about -20s in kent in the 1960s flowing off the continent.

Here we got -17/18c in 2010 which is the coldest ive experienced, it didnt actually feel that cold tbh. You knew that it was very cold but it didnt feel like it was cutting through you like a -17c windchill would. A coat and top would keep you alright.

Ill be happy if its ice days and crispy.

It got to -18C in one of the frost hollows in the SE (Chesham I believe) in Dec 2010. Central London's record low is -10C, Heathrow's is -12C.

A few readings below -20C have occurred in the area known as Greater London today in the 1800s, but there is no way of verifying them.

Yes because id be suprised if the record low was -10c. That sounds a bit too high.

Not in London, Sheffield at night on my way back to London from the city centre the car said -9C it was around 1am and silly us we were feeling a bit pekish and didn't we get a shock!! But it wasn't windy so it felt OK.
And yes London does get cold during easterlies but you would need to go into the hilly open areas to REALLY feel the chill and that wind! Generally no lower than -5C in London.

-20C sounds quite exaggerated, that's near the record low for Paris. -10C for Central London sounds about right.

I'm talking about the days before London rapidly expanded, so the potential for cold was greater than it is now, so -20C in the former towns of London isn't totally unrealistic.

Northolt fell to -16.1C in 1962, and -14.2C in December 2010.
