Is there such a place? Although I absolutely detest winter, I think that a little bit of cold weather helps me to appreciate the warmer days. Is there anywhere where there's actual winter (i.e. snow) but where it lasts only 6 to 8 weeks?

Winters in northern Kentucky look short but sweet, followed by hot summers.

Louisville, Kentucky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Or maybe Nashville.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashvil...nessee#Climate

Interesting. I was in Nashville one December. It felt roughly as cold as it was in Salt Lake when I left. I can take it for awhile, but here in Salt Lake City, the average first snowfall is on November 6 and the average last snowfall is on April 18. That's 45% of the year where snow is a very real possibility. Our seasons seem to look kind of like this:

Spring: May and June
Summer: July and August
Fall: September and October
Winter: November, December, January, February, March and April

This means that we're only about 1/3 of the way through winter right now, and I am just about ready to scream!

Well, it kind of has to be snowy to be "real" winter.

Nashville is chilly at night, but as you an see, the days are much warmer, and it warms up much faster.

Memphis maybe. Lows average around freezing with highs warming to around 50. One or two minor snow events a year, with a snowstorm (4"+) a few times a decade. Summers are hot, so you might wish for the brief colder weather then.

The DC metro has what I'd consider a short but real winter.

Mid-Atlantic, basically Philadelphia-DC area
Anywhere close to the Ohio River

Winter is there, but it's short and summer clearly dominates.

Nashville and Memphis in winter are basically like November in Salt Lake City, not sure if you're fine with that.
