I would look at areas of NW Indiana in Porter County as well. You can be in a small town and enjoy the benefits of having Chicago only a little more than an hour's drive away. Also, NW Indiana has a climate that is moderated by Lake Michigan. Lows do not get that cold in the winter with the moderating lake influences. Also, pine and spruce trees grow very well in the soils there downwind from Lake Michigan. This may be important to you if you are coming from the UP. Average snowfall would be 30 inches or less in areas away from the snowbelt. However, climate change has been affecting the winters everywhere as you know.

Actually, the further from a big city like Chicago, the better. A town only needs a population of 10,000 or so to have a Wal Mart, a Home Depot, etc., which is more than we have around here.
I've looked up info on Cairo IL, but there are aspects of it I do not like.
Southern Indiana might not be too bad, I know very little about it.
Thanks again for the input!

I would highly recommend Valparaiso, Indiana. This is a smaller town with a University in NW Indiana. The population is around 25,000 with a slow rate of growth. It does have the usual assortment of big box stores, but also has a nice downtown area as well. Many areas south of the town are rural with corn fields. The city of Valparaiso is quite nice with many great neighborhoods and a very good atmosphere. This town would be 1-1.5 hours away from Chicago. The weather is moderate with 4 seasons. The winter temperatures are moderated by Lake Michigan. Snowfall is not that significant at around 30 inches or less per winter.

Or if you want a smaller town that is north of Valparaiso you could look at Chesterton. This town has under 20,000 people and is a short drive to Lake Michigan.
