NAM snow depth Froday Morning, this factors in melting so this would be projected depth Friday 8am.
I'm glad I live in a tropical climate where stuff like this can't happen.

Very crazy weather in the middle of the country for this time of the year...from Texas to Minnesota.

Houston, Texas - Currently 75 F/24 C. Forecast low of 45 F/7 C tonight and 44 F/7 C tomorrow. Tomorrow's high is only forecast to get up to 66 F/19 C. The record low max of 61 F/16 C for tomorrow should remain safe, but still interesting that tomorrow's high will be almost 20 F below average. These departures from average wouldn't be unusual during the winter and earlier in the spring, but I imagine it is this time of the year when the weather should be more stable.

McAllen, Texas - Currently 89 F/32 C. Forecast low of 51 F/11 C. 50 F/10 C tomorrow night...about 20 F below average. Tomorrow's high 75 F/24 C...around 15 F below average. Considering how hot McAllen is, I would be cherishing this last gasp of cool weather before the beastly summer sets in if I lived there.

Dallas, Texas - Currently 53 F/12 C and overcast at 1PM in May. An average afternoon this time of the year should be sitting around 80 F/27 C. But the high was 69 F/21 C at midnight...not representative of the unusually cool conditions. Tomorrow's high is only forecast to reach 60 F/16 C...more typical in January as opposed to May. The record low for tomorrow (41 F/5 C) is in jeopardy.

Lubbock, Texas - Currently 41 F/5 C with a windchill of 29 F/-2 C. Forecast low of 27 F/-3 C. This would be a new all-time record low for the month of May if it happens. Average high this time of the year is 80 F...today is about 40 F below average.

Little Rock, Arkansas - After today, the temperature isn't expected to reach 70 F/21 C until Monday and even then it may still remain below average. Average high this time of the year is around 77 F/25 C.

Oklahoma City - Currently 40 F/4 C with a windchill of 28 F/-2 C. Today's record low max could be smashed by 10 F. Tonight will be near record low temperatures. Average high this time of the year is 77 F/25 C...today is nearly 40 F below that...similar to Lubbock. It won't be anywhere near that until the middle of next week.

Kansas City isn't forecast to rise above 50 F/10 C until Sunday. Snow is possible there. Average high this time of the year is 70 F/21 C. Today and tomorrow will be about 30 F below average. 25 F below average Saturday.

Great stuff, huh?

I wonder what effect this is having on vegetation.

It's not something that happens every year. Not every other either. And those locations are close to the sea level, not high elevation. A big fuss enough to make the news. Our climate is relatively stable, and snow in May is quite rare.

Last post for me for today. Gotta run. Sorry for flooding the pages, its not often we have this type of event in May.

May 2, 2013. Normals vs Actual. Normal high is in the 60s in the Upper mid west yet Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa are stuck in the 30s. Even down to Kansas and Nebraska.

Texas Normal highs are in the 70s and 80s yet its only in the 40s and 50s

Can you imagine normal highs in the 60s and you have a fresh foot of snow on the ground???

TWC 10 Amazing things about this storm. http://www.weather.com/news/weather-...577e6f8df4ffd6

Look at Amarillo Texas. A record high of 97 degrees April 30. Bottoming out at 33 degrees on the morning of May 2. The wind chill at the time was 19 degrees!

This is certainly an awesome event for this late in the season. Quite a few areas are thickly covered in the white stuff. For the Plains states this will likely be the last snow of the season, and the snowfall season is certainly ending with a bang, with all the record-smashing totals, not to mention the record cold. It looks like Kansas City is going to top out at 40F today, which is 32F below the average high of 72F. Tomorrow is forecast to top out at 38F, which will be 34F below average. I hear that this will set a new record low maximum for the month of May if it verifies.

Well, it'll slow growth, and freezes have been widespread. For places like Kansas City and western Iowa the snow should help insulate the plants from the cold. I don't anticipate any major effects other than a slowing of growth, assuming there is any (the trees are still bare in Minnesota).

Blooming Prairie, Minnesota is now up to 18 inches, and Rice Lake, Wisconsin is up to 17 inches. Let's get those totals up to 20, baby .

It is. And everything that has happened in Minnesota and Winnipeg during April. The latest date when the snowpack was completely melted in our capital was during the extremely cold winter/spring of 1941. The date was 5 May. And places like Duluth, MN is 13.5 degrees more south than what we are!

It's incredible! And snowfall at 37N at this time? Wow! Our snowfall gets into the news when they are at 64N!

Ah yes, the snow will help the crops. Under the snow the temps will probably not even get below freezing, but the recently planted seeds are not at their most vulnerable state right now, they can take damage, but not that much. Worse would be that near-mature crops and fruit would suffer from a hard freeze. Or of course, if planted seeds are surfaced, they could take serious damage, like in the lower midwest States.
