I heard its been one of the coldest starts to a year?

it also snowed 8-10 feet in the last week on Thompson Pass in the Chugach Range.

And Alyeska Resort reported 60 feet of snowfall this season. Sounds like those Chugach glaciers will continue advancing

Kaul is that pronounced like "kowl" or "kall". Sorry, been bothering me. I'm a long time lurker and always wondered.

Anyway spring is off to a stormy start here. MASSIVE LIGHTNING. Big storms. We've had 23 thunderstorms so far this MAY. We had 9 in April and about 20 in March cos of an unusual low pressure pattern.

I always pronounced it "kall", as in Paul or Saul. It just sounds better, though Kaul himself is entitled to weigh in if he so chooses.

Well I don't reveal my precise location for security reasons but its on the edge of a desert where our rainfall and storms are very variable from one year to another but this year we've got lucky, Something to do with the Jetstream, being further south than usual... not that I'm complaining.

That is true only for the interior region. The north slope was actually above normal (warmer) for the same time period.

From Rick's blog...
Deep Cold: Interior and Northern Alaska Weather & Climate: Why So Cold in April in Fairbanks
Quote:
Courtesy of NCEP.NCAR Reanalysis April was extremely warm over the East Siberian Sea and quite warm over all over eastern Siberia and Chukotka, with the cold over most Alaska (extending southeast thru the Canadian Praise Provinces and into the upper Midwest). The northwest North Slope and Bering Straits region were not so nearly so cold, being closer to the high aloft and, for the Slope, getting occasional warm pushes from the west.

I'm glad that you asked. I drew the inspiration for my username from the word "COLD". Therefore, it should be pronounced the same way. Kaul=cold.

Impressed with Alaska.

Fairbanks, Alaska has not had a day above 50 degrees since Oct. 4, 2012

The five-week period from April 3 to May 7 was the coldest in 109 years of record keeping at Fairbanks, Alaska, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

They got 133 inches of snow from the winter of 2011-12 which had melted by April 25.
This winter they got 92 inches yet 10 inches still on the ground in May.
Normal snowfall is 75 inches.

With a morning temperature in the mid 50s, this is the first day that feels like summer. Earlier warm days were drier.
