Very nice in Long Island right now. Sun, 70's, and a strong breeze. None of those storms....yet (maybe).

Get ready to cover your plants...Again.

"Low temperatures Saturday night are projected to get as low as 25 degrees in Pennsylvania. This will be terrible for gardens and could even damage leaves. The worst will be further south in West Virginia though, where winds will be light to calm."

Still too warm for here. At least compared to the way April was.

Ground is still too wet for any of the big farms to do any planting. I managed to plant a few things in the yard, but would probly do better turning goldfish loose in the yard.

The last frost in the Mts of VA/WVA/PA is normally in May I think. It would be a much bigger issue if the lows were forecast to be that cool closer to the cities/I-95 to the east, but it looks like there is little chance of that. NWS has lows in the upper 40's and 50's for points east on the same night:

The last frost usually isn't this late into May, but we'll see what happens. The trees are likely left out there, and the growing season has begun so it could be a big issue. Having a frost near the coastal cities is extremely unlikely, possibly record-breaking.

I lived in western Upstate NY for a time, I can't remember a frost this late, though it has happened before.

Yes, who knows what will happen, it should be a marginal situation in any event.

As far as last frost, you'd be surprised - some of those West VA highlands have last frost dates in mid May. This is from NWS Pitt:

MANNINGTON 8 WNW (465626)
First/Last Dates
Minimum Temperature <= 32 degrees F
Years: 1981-2010

Last First
Prob 100% 100%

For myself the median last frost (32.5°F) is May 9, but the window on frosts closes quick: only 10% of them are past May 22. I suspect it's less than that these days, as the data includes cooler years from the early 1900s.

For a station in Long Island along the sound (Setauket), only 10% of them are past April 26.
