We've had a day in May when it was 28-29c during the day and -2c during the night, so 30-31c is the biggest range I've ever experienced.

From -4.5C to 9.1C today, so a range of 13.6C.

The largest range for NZ yesterday was 23C at a sea level location.
Where was the 31C? This is an item I posted on a NZ forum a couple of years back:

" A place I should have remembered sooner from monthly summaries, which pretty consistently had the highest average daily range on the Met. lists: Earnscleugh, on the western side of the river, significantly further from it than the Alex. site. Its mean daily max. over a long period of records was a very slight 0.2C higher than Alex in summer months (and overall for the year), but the mean minimum was about 1.7C lower. Even so, the best it could manage from 36 years' data for a daily range was on 25/2/1972, from 0.8C to 31.0C, so a highest recorded range of 30.2C."

For France, it's 31.1°C (36.4/5.3°C) in Trensacq, in the Landes forest (SW) on August 10th, 1998. Clothing would be a nightmare on such a day.

Last year featured a couple 20°C+ amplitudes at Orly airport:
March 15th: 20.1°C (22.2/2.1°C)
September 9th: 21.8°C (31.2/9.4°C) - new monthly record

Here are the records since 1921:

January: 15.7°C (-0.3/-16°C)
February: 17.9°C (18.4/0.5°C)
March: 23.5°C (22.9/-0.6°C)
April: 20.5°C (24.9/4.4°C)
May: 21.8°C (35/13.2°C)
June: 20.1°C (37/16.7°C and 27.3/7.2°C)
July: 21.3°C (38/16.7°C)
August: 25.3°C (39/13.7°C)
September: 21.8°C (31.2/9.4°C)
October: 25°C (29.4/4.4°C)
November: 17.1°C (14.9/-2.2°C)
December: 17.4°C (9.6/-7.8°C)

November and December are notorious for their cloudy weather and low diurnal ranges, so unsurprisingly their amplitude records came from weather fronts (warm front for November 1997 and cold front for December 1978).
Thanks to thins thread, I found out that January 1966 featured pretty cold weather for Paris. Interestingly the biggest amplitude was an ice day.

Not sure what the highest diurnal range is here, but it would be higher than 25C. I doubt it's been higher than 30C though. Last December one day went from 7.9C-31.6C. In August one day went from -0.5-24.4C. October last year featured many days with high diurnal ranges. Dalby, Qld - October 2012 - Daily Weather Observations

I believe the largest diurnal range ever recorded in the UK was 28.5C, when Altnaharra went from -27.2C to 1.5C on 30 December 1995. If we stick to Met Office measurements (0900 - 2100), it's even larger at 29.3C.

Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire (very close to London), went from 1.3C to 29.1C, on 29 August 1936, which appears to be a very close second.

Waikaia in Northern Southland - just over the mountains from Earnscleugh. It wasn't an official site, but it was a Stevenson screen (homebuilt). I remember the range, but not the temps for it. I do remember the extremes of -18C and 38C.

I told the guy that his records would be of interest to someone - exercise books going back about 40 years (from memory). I have met plenty of farmers who have kept records for quite long periods.

There are NIWA records for some sites there, but not daily ones - getting those off paper and into the database will be done eventually, but there's a large backlog.
