Nobody mentioned Ann Arbor, Michigan?

Fits all the criteria, although perhaps not as big a city as the OP might want. But definitely a bustling, walkable downtown, hip, fairly outdoorsy (although not as much as Denver), liberal/progressive, four seasons, bike-friendly, summer storms, geeky...

Not the cheapest place to rent, although I'm not sure what the OP's definition of affordable is.

Chicago and Denver would be my other two picks. Or Evanston, just north of Chicago and also right on the lake. Lovely downtown, 30 minutes to downtown Chicago, miles and miles and miles of lakefront beaches and trails, two universities. A bit more affordable than Chicago and every bit as diverse.

I am thinking Asheville, North Carolina. Not so large a city, but plenty of exciting culture, liberal, four season climate, recreation, all that. Not so sure about prices, however.

Lived in metro Detroit my whole life. Have visited every part of the United States. The city of Detroit itself is no different than any major U.S. city...crime, blight, etc. The suburbs and surrounding area are beautiful. Still love it here in metro Detroit.
