I though I would post a similar question..........
Simply put, (I know a lot of this is hypothetical) would you move to a harsh climate (for example lets say Subarctic Quebec near Hudson Bay in the high 50's latitude) if it meant being able to have a long term relationship/marriage with your dream girl/guy?
For argument sake, lets say that you would not only have stable and secure employment, but that you make 20 times the median income of said location.
So would you live with the love of your life if it meant moving to the subarctic taiga where the first snow usually occurs in late Sep and last snow around Fathers Day in Mid June with mid-winter temps averaging around -20F, and as low as 40 below, but with summer temps only getting into the 50's and maybe 60's??
I know its harder to define "dream girl/guy" than it is to define a quantitative salary that was put forth in the other thread, but still......I just want to see the responses.
Here is that other thread in reference to climate vs salary
Yes, I would move to a climate I really dislike such as Miami, find the love of my life, and convince that person to move back with me to the UK. Simples.
A hypothetical question for me as I'm a married man. But if this was the case, I probably wouldn't purely because climate plays a larger part in my overall happiness than most people.
I am lucky in that my wife is originally from the UK but grew up here in Australia and has family here so we are both dedicated to staying (and there are plenty of A/A+ climates in Australia).
Well, I wouldn't mind moving to the arctic tundra, but for a cold weather fan like myself the equivalent would be moving to Singapore, Miami, or Oklahoma City. Climate plays a huge role in my well-being and health, and living in a D or F grade climate would induce a lot of suffering and deprivation, and no girlfriend could change the fact that I'd live a miserable lifestyle in a place like that - it just wouldn't be worth it. Hypothetically, I'd either persuade her to live in a more tolerable climate with me, or failing that I'd either resume being single or find another girlfriend in a place like Anchorage or Davos .
There are so many factors in this- for me, the cultural and political climate, as well activities, play as important of a part as the physical climate. Also, I'd be willing to put up with any climate(other than Antarctica) for the short term (like a year or so) if he was making a lot of money and the right guy in lots of ways. For the long-term, it's kinda iffy. I'd have to try the region out and if I don't like it or I find the relationship is not working out, I could always get out.
If we both made a lot of money and the relationship was going well, I'd tolerate living in a climate not as desirable and use the money to travel then vacation to different climates.
As far as climate tourism, I think it would be kinda cool to live in Singapore and then vacation in Fairbanks, Alaska in winter or live in Boston and then visit the heat extreme he outback of Australia (during Boston's winter which is Australia's summer).
My ideal guy must LOVE travel and adventure so he would also be up for this kinda ****. Also he MUST MAKE A LOT OF MONEY!!!!!
No...there are two main criteria I require for my location and climate is one of them. (Population is the other.) If it doesn't meet my criteria (which isn't difficult--tolerable weather year round, big-ish metro area--there are many places in the world that offer these) There are some other things I prefer, of course, but these two are non-negotiable...if they don't have them I won't move there for any reason. In fact, I made sure to feel out my significant other about these ideals prior to getting too involved.
I wouldn't mind living in the UK (nowhere there would rate higher than a D for me) and flying over to Spain every weekend. So, yes. Not in any other scenario though.
