I cannae confess to reading the Scotsman online, but found this wee article of interest:

High blood pressure is linked to cold wet weather - Health - Scotsman.com

(partial quote):
..."A study by Glasgow University found that chilly conditions, low levels of sunshine and the rain all had an impact on patients’ blood pressure readings.

They also found that in those people whose blood pressure was most sensitive to the weather, the risk of dying increased by 35 per cent."...

I wonder if this has anything to do with the correlation around deaths increasing in the cooler months (or that could be related to other factors).

I am sure excessive heat is no better either (i.e. heat stroke etc). But I'll make a mental note not to permanently locate to the Outer Hebrides, Campbell Island or any other sub arctic scud fest.

PS Will leave the attempts at Scottish accents to the Scots on this forum (do we have any?)

Scots have bad hearts because they have terrible diets, and as a result, enjoy the lowest life expectancy in the UK. I guess the bad weather just contributes even further to their terrible health.

My blood pressure stays about the same regardless of the weather, and if anything becomes healthier during cold, wet weather since I'm able to get out and exercise more. I can't speak for anyone else, though, and in any case cold weather is no excuse for doing nothing about poor cardiovascular health.

They deep fry pretty much everything. Beautiful country mostly, just the bad weather and relatively poor health in the poorer areas is unfortunate.

Strange. My blood pressure spikes in the summer heat and lowers in the winter cold. Its the Top 3 reasons why I need the cold. Its healthier for me. I believe this is also because snow and cold brings me to a relaxing point and the heat to a nervous uncomfortable point. I think just typing this it bounced from low to high just now. LOL

Winter is in 4 months. There, thats better.

This has been known in the medical community for years. Basically, your blood vessels constrict in cold weather which increases the pressure of the blood flowing through them: Blood pressure: Is it affected by cold weather? - MayoClinic.com

I think weather stress plays a part as well (read the second sentence in my quote). Basically if certain weather conditions cause stress this will cause high blood pressure and increase the likelihood of adverse health conditions.

So while there could be physiological aspects associated with cold weather (i.e. narrowing of blood vessels), disliking prolonged conditions plays a part as well. For example, a cool, cloudy weather worshiper marooned in Phoenix will experience anxiety just as much as a sun lover will if they were stuck in the Faroe Islands.

That is why weather vacations are important I think!
