This was a tough one for me as I'm inclined to almost always choose the milder spot when it comes to Europe.... but I think in this case I'll sacrifice cooler winters for a longer, stronger, sunnier summer.
Trieste seems like a cloudier version of Long Island with milder winters. The summer nights of Trieste are slightly hotter than New York City — it must get rather sticky. Santander seems more comfortable, but the nearly 500 less hours of annual sun makes me choose Trieste.
I would choose Trieste, Only because it's sunnier. Although Trieste has "A" summers, I would prefer Santander's temps overall.
Trieste's minimum temps look dodgy. It has more sun in winter than Santander, but a much smaller diurnal range. Heat Island?
I think she's more of a drought island
when it pours tons of water in Friuli, Istria and Slovenia we are usually spared
and we're also spared by long unstandable humidity that characterize Italian cities
Nei, Trieste summers are generally ok, this place is dry, windy, there's always a breeze from the sea, we hardly have to deal with bugs, I barely see mosquitos, spiders, flies or the likes...
the only con is that, since we lie on the Mediterranean, we can experience once in a while a heat wave from North Africa
for example this summer we have had one that lasted until ... a few hours ago, it started in mid July, lows always way over 70 and highs in their 90s
the main downpoint of winter is bora, the local wind, it is able to drop the felt temps to 0 F or even less, I can't stand it when it happens, it really pisses people off
but both the heat wave and bora don't happen all the time, there are winters who pass nicely and summers cooler than the average
the main difference between the two cities is that Trieste has more of a four season climate and is sunnier while Santander has more blurred seasonal excursions and is more humid, rainy.
