Only older homes around here do not have central air. I'd say any homes built from around the 80's onward would have central air. Be highly unusual if it didn't. Older homes that have not converted to central air have window units. All central air homes have a thermostat that is set at a heating temp or cooling temp.

I live in ABQ, NM and my ac is set to 73. I have ac-no swamp cooler which some people have here. With the adobe apartment building I live in, it seems to keep the apartment cooler than it would otherwise. During the night, it cools down enough not to run much at least not yet. We have highs right now in the high 80's. However, I did live in VA where I wouldn't have been able to live without ac and in western MA where I had to buy a window ac because I lived on the 4th floor and heat rises. Much more comfortable that way.

Don't have AC, but generally try to maintain my room at 75+ F, which requires heating at least nine months per year. On the hottest summer days I might open a window to bring the temp down to 80 F.

The house is designed/orientated for maximum sun in winter and minimum in summer so doesn't need much heating and no cooling. The coldest the house would get on cold winter mornings before the fire has been started, would be 18-19C/66F, apart from the laundry which gets down to 16C/6OF.

In summer the house would sometimes get down to 21/70FC but seldom hotter than 26C/79F. Doors and windows are open 24/7. I sleep on the veranda for about 4-5 months of the year.

You should try it sometime. The house has about 110 m2 of covered veranda, so it's not really that big a deal. Its great if it's raining or thunder. A few beers and some reefer...can't beat it.

I do sleep under the stars a bit though, usually on surfing or hunting trips.

Heck, I just wish I lived in an area where A/C was optional. It is a must here. I leave it on 76.
