I'm not giving any false impressions. If you read the entire thread Owen you would see I am refering to a particular poster who claimed no true palms trees grow in the UK, they do. I was not making out it is Barbados here, just correcting someone about what is actually able to grow here...

it's a far cry from actual palm trees.
Are they called Cornish palms over there? Interesting.

I don't know anyone that calls them 'Cornish Palms'...

They are very commonly planted where I live & everyone either calls them Cordyline's or Cabbage Palms/Cabbage Trees...

Thanks. Do Cabbage trees get die off there? A 500 yr old one died here recently, although I see it has re-sprouted. C banksii is the common one around here.

The only Cornish things I know, are Cornish Pasties...yum.

There are not many 'huge' ones even in Cornwall as they tend to get damaged in a bad winter every 30 years or so. But here there are some pretty big ones about & some do seem to have that problem where they flower themselves to death or at least it kills the 'head' that is flowering...

In our last bad winter, 2010, Cordyline's further up north got cut back to the ground but even these re-sprouted. They are very tough plants!

Anyway, nothing too special in Nice aside from March which was the wettest in decades (perhaps in history? I'll have to check) and one of the coolest as well - April was slightly warmer and wetter than usual, May slightly cooler and significantly wetter but nothing extraordinary either way.

They are everywhere up here too - they're nothing special and can be seen growing all over the UK.

Indeed, even in the frozen wastelands of northern Ireland...Quite a lot were badly damaged or killed by the winter of 2010 around the UK though as they are only hardy to around -10C, but even some of these have re-sprouted...
