Where I live (Long Island, NY), 2010 was the hottest summer on record. I found out that the other hottest years on record were all 11 years apart: 1999, 1988, 1977, 1966. I was born in 1979, so obviously I do not remember that 1966 or 1977, but I do remember 1988 and 1999 being very hot.

I've also heard that solar activity is on an 11 year cycle. Can this have something to do with why those years are the hottest? Or is it just coincidence?

It's also interesting that in the last 2 of such years, 1999 and 2010 (4th of July fell on a Sunday both years), the hottest days of the year were July 4, 5, 6, and 7. In both years, July 3 was hot but unremarkable. Is there any reason for this (maybe July 4 is when sunspot activity peaks?), or is it just pure coincidence? I do know that, ironically, July 4 is when the Eath is farthest from the sun.
