A lot more pine trees up north, probably feels less dead during the winter. From camping trip in Barrie:

I planted this about 8 yrs ago and it just decided to flower this year. It's from around Drumheller. Guess the snow is a good insulator for it in the winter.

Some pictures I took yesterday in the northern part of my district, close to Douro river, this is the most arid area of Portugal with less than 400mm per year.
The car marked 33ºC at one point.

Location on the portuguese map

This is a very remote area, sparsely populated, the closest sizable town , is my hometown 70 km away

Castelo Rodrigo

Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo

And these ones from last week, closer to home, a couple of kilometers to the west:
Everything is built in granite around here

Sernancelhe

Penedono

Lapa

Mass hour, people are still very religious in this part of the country

All of these photos are from areas above 700 meters in altitude

^^^ Nice photos. Looks similar to the beaches in town where we go 2-3 times a week during summer

Are they natural sand beaches on the lakes?

Do the lakes have the same mechanisms as the sea -cross shore drift and transport of sand and gravel etc?

On this side of the lake, some of the beaches are man made... In fact a large chunk of the downtown area sits on what used to be the lake but was infilled...

Absolutely. The Great Lakes are basically inland seas.... Lake Michigan is 58,000 sq km and 281m deep

Seems as if everything ends up on the east or south end of the lake

Here is what the Indiana Dunes look like... About 30 miles from Chicagocity limits
