That said, 12C isn't my idea of "far too hot to sleep in"; even I, living in what I consider a heat trap, wouldn't be too hot opening my window if it was 12C at 1 am, assuming that the evening temperature wasn't above 20C. 12C isn't exactly ideal sleeping weather, but it is adequate for opening a window for cooling (for the record, ideal would be -2C or so).

So, in closing, there may be peculiarities in his living situation that make cool nights a requirement for a comfortable bedroom, but in general I don't think 12C is poor sleeping weather.

In response to Nei's comment about the temperature dropping still further, I've spent many nights where the morning low isn't significantly lower than the temperature at 1 am, so it depends greatly on the weather fronts, cloudiness, windiness, and location. Also, even if it drops further until the morning low not being able to go to sleep until after 1 am isn't my idea of good sleeping weather, especially considering that the morning low will occur well before 8 hours has elapsed.
In the summer the temp where I live doesn't start dropping until like 2am because it is broad daylight right past 11pm.

I agree with your friend. It has to get down to the 40s for me to open the window and cool the house down to about mid 60sF. While the 50sF are nice to sleep outside, the inside of the house isn't that cool even with a window open and fan blowing. Plus, there may need to be cross ventilation. While doable in the low to mid 50s for me, it needs to be about 30s and 40s for the window to be open. so in Celsius terms, I guess I'm talking 6-10C to be comfortable?

I find 65°F a bit on the cool side to wake up to, though tolerable. There's a risk of getting colder than that for nights in the 40s for me if I leave too many windows open. Probably wouldn't run a fan if the night temps are in the low to mid 50s.

Either some here live in heat traps or like rather cool sleeping temperatures.

So the 2.00 am is typically the same as the maximum temperature for the day?

No it isn't the temp on a warm day like today in July would stay to about 18c to around 11pm and then start dropping a small bit until 2am when it would drop more and then steady off, after it would then drop more at 5am to about 11c.
