But that 2.7C figure was in January, not December. December has indeed gotten colder and is the coldest month of the winter in some places now.

Cheers - I thought somewhere averaged higher, but the Met Office climate station map isn't working.

For Argentina:

Warmest yearly average temp: 22.8 C in Las Lomitas, Formosa.
Coldest yearly average temp: 5.7 C in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego

Warmest monthly average temp in the warmest month (January): 28.8 C in Rivadavia, Salta
Coldest monthly average temp in the warmest month (January): 8.1 C in Estancia La Correntina, Tierra del Fuego

Warmest monthly average temp in the coldest month (July): 18.0 C in Buena Vista, Formosa
Coldest monthly average temp in the coldest month (July): -0.3 C in Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, or -1.7 C in Paso Garibaldi (a Mountain Pass), Tierra del Fuego. There may be many other stations colder than this in the Andes Mountains but they are surely very remote and almost uninhabited.

Warmest temp ever recorded: 49.1 C on January 1920 in Villa María del Río Seco, Córdoba
Coldest temp ever recorded: -35.0 C on July 1991 in Maquinchao, Río Negro

OK, these last two are disputed by some, but they are AFAIK the official figures from the National Weather Service (SMN).

In Australia, the hottest town would be Wyndham, Western Australia. Annual average high/low is 35.7/23.3°C. This would make the annual average temp 29.5°C. The airport has an annual high of 35.9C which as far as I know is the hottest official average high in Australia, although the low is cooler at 22.4C. The place is humid as **** in summer as well.

The coldest station is probably Mt Wellington in Tasmania, with annual high/low of 7.9/1.4°C. The coldest actual inhabited town is likely Mt Hotham Ski Resort in Victoria, average high/low is 7.9/1.9C. However, Charlotte Pass in NSW has a warmer high, but a colder low at -0.4C.

What is the highest max temperature in July for a Swedish location? I'd like to if any Nordic place can beat the Kouvola's 22.9C.

@Ariete: I could only find data for the swedish "Karesuando", but since there is also a finnish village called Karesuvanto, which has pretty much the same temperatures, I'd say that it is the coldest in Finland (January).. at least colder than Muonio.

some new data:

USA:

Highest warmest-month mean: Furnace Creek, 39°C
Highest warmest-month max: Furnace Creek, 46.9°C
warmest annual mean: Kailua Kona, Hawaii, 25.5°C
Coldest annual mean: Barrow, Alaska, -11,2°C
Highest precipitation: Glenwood, Hawaii, 6097 mm
Lowest precipitation: Furnace Creek, 59.9 mm

all 81-10

Sweden:

Warmest annual mean: Örja, 8.2°C
Warmest mean in the coldest month: Örja, Falsterbo, Malmö, Utklippan, 0.0°C
Coldest mean in the warmest month: Riksgränsen, 10.1°C
Highest precipitation: Riksgränsen, 1005.5 mm
Lowest precipitation: Abisko, 303.7 mm

all 61-90

well, that precipitation high isnt correct. dont what the rainiest place in sweden is, but torup (halland) for example has 1156mm as annual precipitation (1961-1990).

and its no surprise that finland has warmer coldest-month averages than sweden, since fmi use the newer (81-10) averages. however, im kind of surprised that finland doesnt have colder winter averages than sweden since its further east. but that is due to finlands flat topography and lack of frost hollows i guess.

and btw, ariete, i dont know what the highest average max in the warmest month is for stations in sweden, alltough målilla, sweden, has 23,6C as an average high in july between 1996-2012
