Should go into mid February with a couple of pops above freezing.
The atmosphere has been carved out. There is no warm "pattern" or "torch" in the near future. The southeast ridge (which we need for true heat) has been squashed and gone thanks to the recent flow.
We can only hope for a zonal type pattern to get us seasonable OR for us near the coast that Atlantic ridge to shift West.
Not only should the cold last with deeper injections of arctic air but February could be snowy as well.
Current 500mb heights. (18,000 foot atmospheric flow)
O'Hare:-13.4C
Midway:-12.2C
Northerly Island:-10.3C
Northwest suburban Barrington:-16.3C
West suburban Elgin:-15.4C
here in the south suburbs:-14.1C
Those average minimums are certainly cool for Chicago,
look exactly like "normal" average minimums for Montreal (colder ones like Ottawa)
Weird January, we're freezing in arctic conditions,
meanwhile the Yukon and parts of the Northwest Territories
are experiencing exceptional January warmth,
with highs in 40s and 50s F, crazy

Based on the forecast, O'Hare will probably end the month with an average low around -15 to -16C. Midway around -14C, and Barrington probably below -18C. Barrington is about 25km northwest of O'Hare.

Ugh. Though I do see a few highs in the mid to upper 20s some days, so maybe it's becoming less intense. Swinging back and forth. Wouldn't the ridge have to move to give us any snow.
