A look at the 850mb and 925mb temps. Changeover happened because storm track pushed warm air north but cold air hung on long at the surface hence the ice and not snow to rain.

2PM totals 7.0 inches at O'Hare and 7.2 inched at Midway. If not a single flake fell for the rest of the winter, ORD's 59.6 inches would rank 8th snowiest out of a 129 year record. Midway is around 63 inches
