July 1998:
24th ..... 37.5c
25th ..... 40.5c
26th ..... 41.0c
27th ..... 42.5c
28th ..... 41.0c
29th ..... 39.5c
30th ..... 38.0c

Average = 40.0c
In Melbourne there is a frequent change of airmass/wind direction, sea breezes and fronts that occur as high pressure areas migrate east constantly. Go inland and things change dramatically.

For example, in Mildura, which is the northernmost and warmest town in Victoria, the corresponding weeks look like this:

Jan 2009

27/1 ...... 41.5c
28/1 ...... 43.7c
29/1 ...... 42.8c
30/1 ...... 43.3c
31/1 ...... 44.1c
1/2 ........ 42.9c
2/2 ........ 42.6c

Average = 43.0c

Jan 1908

14/1 ...... 38.9c
15/1 ...... 40.6c
16/1 ...... 42.8c
17/1 ...... 42.8c
18/1 ...... 42.8c
19/1 ...... 43.9c
20/1 ...... 46.1c

average = 42.6c

As for the record hottest week for this particular location, most likely occured in Jan 1939:

7/1 ....... 45.2c
8/1 ....... 46.1c
9/1 ....... 43.1c
10/1 ...... 47.2c
11/1 ...... 46.0c
12/1 ...... 45.7c
13/1 ...... 46.9c

average = 45.7c

Figures for Nelson in Feb 1973: I was 10 at the time and can remember that we didn't have to study one afternoon and the whole school spent the rest of the day at the pool.

1/2 22C
2/2 22C
3/2 27C/
4/3 34C
5/2 31C
6/2 27C
7/2 36C

Average temperature 28.15C, Not very impressive. Heat waves don't ever happen here.

Any extended hot spells for me, have been when I'm in the south of country.

From 10-16 Jan 1956 (easily the warmest month ever in Central Otago and Southland and some of Canterbury) Alexandra had an average daily high of 32.8C, about 7.5C above the normal. Given the lack of extreme swings in this country, that was well out of the ordinary.

In 2010 daily average temperature was 27°C for two weeks straight. Highs were around 33°C. I do hope that was a once in a lifetime heat wave.

I'm not sure if this is the absolute hottest week recorded at SeaTac, but it's got to be close.

7/28 97F
7/29 103F

Hottest week (7days straight) in your locations history?

This Year! Longest heat Wave on record for Bridgeport since records began in 1948! Never has there been 7 days in a row in the 90s...until this year.

340p: Islip(Long Island,NY) and Bridgeport(Connecticut) have both hit or exceeded 90 F today for the 7th day in a row. This is the longest such streak at those two sites, and therefore the longest heat wave on record. Records have been kept at Bridgeport since 1948, and at Islip since 1984.

Possibly, though longest stretch of 90°F+ days may not be the same as highest average max. Since the maxes were usually not extreme, I'm not thinking this heatwave didn't break a record. For highest average min, there may be a better chance.
