They don't look anywhere near as black.

Which is why it doesn't make sense. It's bad enough walking on light coloured concrete surfaces during summer, and very few people would have black tarmac for driveways etc, because it wouldn't be user friendly for much of the summer.

Making roads that colour just seems a bit odd,it's as though they want a hot surface.

Tar mac has a lower melt threshold then asphalt. Asphalt buckles in cases of extreme heat

Was in DC yesterday and today. Some trees at peak, others still all green.

Looking back to Lincoln Memorial from Arlington Cemetary

Crepe Myrtle in peak color. Some Crepe M. in DC were still totally green.

I guess another thing to consider is that we're not as sunny as you in the summer, or at all, so even if the temperatures are the same or similar, there will be less sun here.

It's generally not a major issue either way, and I've never seen melting tarmac before here despite there being lots of it.

I'm really coming from the human comfort angle. Those black roads look they wouldn't be nice to walk on in hot sunny weather - even In Northern Ireland, I would have thought.

Melting tar is a bit of an issue here, but mainly due to cost/quality compromise.

Last week we have valley cloud. It was cold wet and cloudy (see first picture). To escape this misery we decided to drive 6 km up the hillside to do some fishing where it was warm and sunny (see second picture). In order to do so, we have to drive through the fog (see third picture).

The fourth picture was taken this morning on the way to work. Looks like Old Man Winter is making his way down the hillside.

Note: The elevation of the first picture was at 500 m (1600 ft), and the second picture was at 1375 m (4500 ft).
