Thunderstorms for me are usually either an annoyance or an inconvenience. They really can interrupt your plans. I remember back on July 28 of this year, when we got those powerful thunderstorms and so much rain in one day my the sump pump in my house came on for the first time in 10+ years of living here. I was trying to watch the final round of the Canadian Open (golf) but the weather completely wrecked that for me, as the Dish signal was on and off, mostly knocked off. If all that had occurred a week earlier and disrupted the final round of the British Open for me, I would have been irate. Yeah, I like weather, but I've never liked thunderstorms or really felt too positive about them. I'm just not a fan of sudden, loud noises.
I've seen my fair share of thunderstorms while visiting Colorado and New Hampshire, so I wouldn't be in awe but I would be interested to watch it nonetheless. Though I would prefer it not ruin a day at an amusement park. :P
Did not ruin the whole day- only shut things down for a bit over an hour. After the storm, the park was practically empty for the remaining almost hour and a half it was open so all the slides were walk on so I prolly got more slides in than I would have if the storm did not come and empty the park out.
I see beauty when I look at looming thunderstorms in the distance, especially at night when it's mostly clear. The lightning illuminates a huge part of the sky. At sunset, the stronger storms produce mammatus clouds, which look like this: http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/...ps529bfcaf.jpg
What I do like about them in the summer is how they usually hit late in the afternoon or early evening, and then the next day dawns sunny and humid. Feels very tropical.
I love thunderstorms, but I'd rather they not happen while I'm at a theme park, I'd be annoyed. I remember one time the park I was at got shut down because it rained so much in such a short period of time. There was so much lightning, I've never seen so many bolts back to back, in 5 second intervals, for 40 minutes straight, it was unreal. The storm itself was pretty cool, but it could've waited a few more hours. This happened in Florida.
I experienced something similar in New Jersey, many of the attractions closed early due to the lightning, which was very frequent and eerily close, but the rain held up until we left, in Florida the rain came without much warning. I wasn't annoyed, because it was already nighttime, but it was slightly scary, the lightning was way too close for comfort.
For me it would be quite annoyed with maybe a little bit of fear but definitely more annoyed than afraid. Like you in the SF bay area, we rarely get thunderstorms up here. We had 2 thunderstorms last month in the space of a week. One of them was of a moderate size and was a little bit unsettling to be honest as I'm not really used to them here.
