Some of the coconut palms there were pretty tall.

I think you need to carry that blue line right along the coast all the way up to near St. Pete.
the info I used was created by the USDA. they used the average winter minimum from 1976-2005 but what i've found is that if you add the last 8 winters and drop the last 8(the 1983-2013 time period) then you find the temps has warmed by an avg of 1.7f. so basically everything that is zone 10 is normally freeze free.

Coconut palms can withstand temperatures just below freezing, but it's the duration that matters, a couple of hours below freezing (per winter) shouldn't kill them.

I will be looking forward to it.

Do your parents not plant out "summer bedding"? The plants/flowers that we plant in our gardens for colourful displays during the summer are mostly of tropical origin & they are also killed by a frost of just 0C...

Depending on the type of plant. Many tropical plants, including palms, can easily take 0C for a short duration, but some plants are more tender...

No It is no different to certain plants getting killed by a cold winter here in the UK. The winter of 2010 saw many parts of the country lose things like Cordyline's that had been growing away quite happily for many years. We are a temperate climate country so we grow much tougher plants, Miami is tropical so they grow completely different things...
