When I was a student, I had the option to spend a summer working in either of these localities. Both are roughly a third of the way between the equator and the north pole, at 33 degrees north. Which climate do you find preferable?
Carlsbad is too dry and summers are too weak for good swimming on the beach unless in a heat wave (even then the water is cold). Myrtle Beach is too muggy in summer for comfortable walking weather. I have yet to experience a severe thunderstorm in my life and would like to once so I vote for spending a summer at Myrtle Beach.

I could probably manage walking in Myrtle Beach. I would definitely have enjoyed the severe thunderstorms of Myrtle Beach, had I chosen to go there. I chose to spend the summer in California, just out of general preference for the state itself. It always seemed to be in the 60s and low 70s by the beach in Oceanside, but by mid July was quite warm just a little bit inland. The one time it got up to 100F (even at the beach) was ironically the same time that I had left Oceanside to visit Eureka up in the far north, where the temperature was in the low 60s. Prior to that, I don't think that it had even gotten into the 80s at the beach. I remember learning about 'June gloom' that summer, as the marine layer was very persistent throughout that month.
Overall, I prefer Myrtle Beach's climate, but the Oceanside/Carlsbad area's summers are very gentle and pleasant, even if rather boring.
Carlsbad for the cooler summers. I do like Myrtle Beach's variable weather outside of summer (can get quite cold at times), but summers are too warm and humid. I've vacationed there a few times.
Carlsbad is chilly at night and no thunderstorms. I'm in central Florida all the time and still the most lightning I've ever seen in one storm was in South Carolina.
