True winter is the season between summer and autumn. In a temperate climate, you can't have spring without winter.

A cold winter to me would be where average temperatures are around freezing or colder.

What about you, where do you draw the line?
I agree that Portland and Seattle have true winters, much more so than where we live. My ideal winter would be more like NYC with several snow accumulations, a couple of blizzards, mixed with warm spells of upper 50s and sunshine. Seattle is too cloudy and doesn't have warm spells like NYC does. As much as I'd like to see snow on occasion in my front yard, I would get tired of constant snow with no subfreezing highs for 4 months (like Minneapolis).

Doubt that's going to happen this winter though. Seems to be one of the uglier ones with maybe highs in the upper 40's F at best. Late February might see 50's F. AHHHH !!!!! Highs in 50's with sunshine= Fantastic T shirt Weather .

When we have highs in the low 50s here, ppl whine about how cold it is and bundle up in heavy parkas and cancel outdoor plans.

Saw ppl wearing parks and hats when walking around. Some ppl cancelled or postponed their outdoor plans (picnics, golf, etc) because temps were in the 40s during the day.

Obviously, who would want to have a picnic if it was in the 40s?

See now that's what a "real" winter is. This sitting inside under a blanket stuff is for the birds.

High of 54 F in November with brilliant sunshine and here are our Rutgers football team cheerleaders wearing warmup jerseys before the game starts. After warmup, those sleeves are removed and all of them dance with bare arms for 4 hours . Stupid lady blocked my photo shot :
