End of story.
Well they aren't advertised as the normals, are they? Unless there is evidence from multiple sources that the lower numbers (again, advertised as normals) are incorrectly calculated/measured, I'm going with what is in the Monthly Weather Summary. As faulty as they are, Accuweather and The Weather Channel use 38/27 F and 84/69 F for Jan and Jul, respectively. Weather Underground does as well.

Perhaps, but would you get big waves at beaches in Marseille?

Sure it does. Says 1981-2010 monthly averages right on top. I click on Central Park, 1981-2010 averages and that's what popped up.

Don't know. Just going by what the NWS NYC data has posted for the 1981-2010 averages in your link.

July 30 year average max Central Park: 84.89F. Looks as if my link is correct, and so is Hartford.

I wonder where the calmest seas in the world are?

Where I live has a ridiculously calm sea, considering it's geographical position. Bad news for a surfer.

Well it often is not as simple as taking the arithmetic mean of the 30 monthly results, or else the Normals (again, I note, a different product from 'Averages') would exactly match the Averages.

^^

That really doesn't help explain the discrepancy. I never heard that there was a difference between 30 year "normals" and "averages". How else would you calculate the 30 year temperature other than adding up the monthly mean and dividing by 30? I mean the figure that I came up with is accurate to the nearest 100th of a degree and matches the 1981-2010 "Average" as listed on the NWS NYC website.

Are people really arguing over a difference of less than 1F?

It's not an argument. It's trying to figure out why there is a discrepancy in temperature albeit less then 1F as you pointed out. I would really like to know. Why one product states July at 84.9F, while another 84.1F? How else do you calculate the 30 year average maximum temperature of a climate station? Qilin34 makes a distinction between climate normals, and averages. I was not aware there was one.

Quote:
In the strictest sense, a "normal" of a particular variable (e.g., temperature) is defined as the 30-year average. For example, the minimum temperature normal in January for a station in Chicago, Illinois, would be computed by taking the average of the 30 January values of monthly-averaged minimum temperatures from 1981 to 2010. Each of the 30 monthly values was in turn derived from averaging the daily observations of minimum temperature for the station. In practice, however, much more goes into NCDC's Climate Normals product than simple 30-year averages. Procedures are put in place to deal with missing and suspect data values. In addition, Climate Normals include quantities other than averages such as degree days, probabilities, standard deviations, etc. Climate Normals are a large suite of data products that provide users with many tools to understand typical climate conditions for thousands of locations across the United States.

I think accuweather and weather Undeground take into account the 1971-2010 average (maybe ???).
And they are not reliable sites for the normals, compared with NOAA and the very relevant calculate that me and chicagogeorge made.
