Was looking at the extremes for LGA and its amazing that 1° above zero is the Top 10 coldest days for January. (records since 1940). That means it rarely gets that low anyway.

Low of 9° this morning is impressive there. LGA's record for today is 4° so they missed by 5. Tomorrows record is 9° but no where near it tomorrow.

Some records from the area.

A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF 3 DEGREES WAS SET AT KENNEDY NY THIS
MORNING. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 8 SET IN 1981.

A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF 0 DEGREES WAS SET AT ISLIP NY THIS

A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF -9 DEGREES WAS SET AT HARTFORD CT THIS
MORNING. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF -7 SET IN 1981.

JERSEY FELL TO 1 DEGREE BELOW ZERO AT 655 AM. THIS TIES THE PREVIOUS

THE TEMPERATURE AT THE ATLANTIC CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN
POMONA, NEW JERSEY FELL TO 3 DEGREES BELOW ZERO AT 442 AM,

The Ocean City, NJ airport recorded -2 this morning, History : Weather Underground

This *might* be a new record for Cape May County.. this article mentions 0F in Cape May as being the lowest temperature ever recorded in Cape May County. Great Blizzard of 1899 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Other locations in Cape May County that may have recorded colder temps, such as Woodbine, NJ , default to the Millville airport, which is Cumberland County. (Which recorded -6F.)

Edit: It looks like the records, which go down to -10F, are taken from the Atlantic City airport, which is at a pretty far inland location. Ocean City Municipal Airport, on the other hand, is *on* the barrier island, so -2F is very impressive for them.

Just a glancing blow from the Arctic front in Saskatoon. Instead of breaking records, we're getting mundane temperatures in the mid-minus 30s Celsius.

My sister just told me she has no water...her pipes froze (Southeast of Buffalo). So on that note I have to give a heads up on that with these temps and what's coming up. I insulated my exposed pipes in the basement yesterday but there are still some behind the wall near foundation not insulated.

Not sure if that drip theory works with single digits and sub zero. Rivers do freeze so running water freezes too. Does anyone have experience with the drip theory?

Here's look at the wind chill forecast tomorrow morning

here's what happens quickly after. WPC Days 3-7 Minimum Temperature Forecasts

Saved image here. Max/Min Tuesday.

Just a reminder before your eyes focus on the colors only thinking only the upper mid west is getting it, look at the actual numbers. Max temps in single digits to the coast is near extremes. 8° is the record low max temp for coastal CT.

Here's the projected 500mb heights for Monday, That's not only a negative tilt but that is a strong trough/airmass and why the West Coast is soaking the warmth (ridge pop). You can see the ridge pop in the north atlantic too. Now you know why sometimes you see those departure maps where Maine is warmer than the rest of the East. Sometimes they are inside that warm ridge

Model Analyses and Guidance

Data for my area from GFS6z. Looks like below freezing for a week after that annoying storm track.

It's interesting to see that JFK hit 3F, especially when the hourly temperatures look like this:

National Weather Service : Observed Weather for past 3 Days : New York/John F. Kennedy Intl Airport

Going to be 9F Mon night and only 21F for the high Tuesday. Coldest air in 18 years is what they're saying on the news.

Yup, I think we were discussing this in another thread with DaninEGM that those are just that...."hourly" OBS. Temps right on that time. Anyone with a thermometer or weather station knows temps dip and rise with every passing minute so their low came in between the hourly OBS. Most likely between 2:51 & 3:51.

Here's a graph of my outdoor temps which the station records every minute. If I was recording just hourly temps then at 2am it was 0.1°F at 3am it was -0.7°F. But the temp dropped in between those hourly times to -1.3°F that hour.

yes correct ASOS record the low and time it was recorded. Often they are included in the CLI report for that station. Some AWOS stations (FAA) do have a high/low temp group every 6 hours, but many AWOS stations dont and thus you do have to go off the observations, which in AWOS's they are often sent out every 20 minutes automatically. ASOS are once an hour, unless conditions are such a special is generated. But the in-between hourly data is certainly saved and recorded. And yes quick drop in temps in between hourlies are certainly not uncommon, esp over snow cover and in times of light winds. We see it all the time up here in the frozen north.
