Is there any country that could beat Death Valley on an average basis? Maybe Saudi Arabia, Libya and Algeria well away from their coasts. Technically no weather station in the Middle East or Sahara has topped 55C (131 F) but I'm sure it happens somewhere (El Azizyah's 58C is considered inaccurate now). However temperatures of 52-53C are fairly common. How often does Death Valley hit 52 or 53C?

A table of your annual minima would make interesting reading (not that it would be at all relevant to the weather where most Canadians live, I realise).

Here are our annual minima (I notice that 1990 never even got below -8.4C! ).

coldest_days
The warmest extreme low in Canada since 1900 was a -40.6°C (-41) in 1906. The second warmest winter still managed to get down to -46.7°C (-52°F). The average low in Canada is -54.2°C (-65.5°F). The country's extreme low has occurred in the Yukon 65 of the past 114 years (including 6 of the past 7). This is ironic because the Yukon is much warmer on average in the winter than the other two territories.

The last 30-year period averages 39.8°C/103.6°F in France. 3 years failed to reach 100°F in that period. The last year that failed to reach 40°C was, ironically, 2006.

The colder temperatures they seem to get are the one thing I'm glad we don't get as much.

List of extreme temperatures in Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This list seems reasonable, though the "coldest temperature readings" one above it skips a lot.

Kuwait City is nearly as hot as Death Valley in summer, if Wikipedia is correct.

Average annual max in Death valley is apparently 124.76F (51.53C) from 50 years of data, the most "mild" year since 1961 was 1965 that still reached 119 (48.3C) DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA - Climate Summary
