Atlanta seems fine right now. Power is still on at my house, and trees are holding up well. It really doesn't seem as bad as they were forecasting, but that could still change.

We got heavy sleet last night, and freezing rain on top of that have turned roads into a thick layer of ice. Freezing rain has accumulated on branches and on top of sleet making it smooth. It doesn't seem like a ton though - the only trees leaning are those with leaves on them. I THINK it might be just raining now? It's hard to tell, but the icicles are all dripping, so that makes me think it might be plain rain here.

Current Water Vapor Image. Those of you in the Mid Atlantic right now look up. You might not be seeing a lot of clouds, but the moisture in the atmosphere is from the Gulf.

WPC 2 day liquid total. It's not often we see 1"+ of liquid dropping with enough cold air around to drop wintry precip. http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/qpf2.shtml

Location: Western edge of Floyd Co., VA, about 50 miles southwest of Roanoke, and 110 miles north of Charlotte, NC.

Just barely able to discern the first few flakes drifting down; only visible against the dark green of the neighbor's pine trees. Time and temp sign at the local market was 14F about an hour ago when I popped up there for a few goodies.

Predictions are for about a foot, plus or minus for this area. Hopefully most it it will be melted away by Sunday and we can move on toward spring.

Here's the most recent forecast from NWS Sterling; there is a slightly strange jump from the 6 to 8 in coastal Harford County, MD to 8 to 10 by NWS Mount Holly in Cecil County, MD.

I love those Southern Pines, some of which appear near Dulles Airport near my home despite the area being a deep frost hollow even with increased urbanisation. IMO watching the vegetation change from mostly deciduous to Southern Pines makes the drive along I-95 in VA from the DC metro to the NC much more interesting. Ice on those pines is still not as beautiful as on defoliated trees though.

Just a mess in South Carolina with 1-2" of sleet & up to 1/2" of ice bringing down wires & trees.

All while a squall line heads to Tampa with temps in the mid 70s there

Look at the actual reports.

It's not too often I'm envious of locations such as Greenville, SC or Raleigh, NC for their winter weather. This is one of those times. They're getting it good. Probably better than our end of this storm.
