What? There are many places in Italy, Spain, here in Greece.. that are by far snowier and more extreme than you in winter.

Yes, in April 2003 it snowed all along the Adriatic (Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Apulia), including Bari and Lecce (5 cm in both cities), and in Cosenza too. While Romagna had only snowflakes, Marche, Abruzzo and Molise had the most of snow. Termoli had 25 cm of snow.

While in March 1987 Lecce had 30 cm of snow.
Vasto (Abruzzo) had 130 cm of snow in March 1962, 100 cm in March 1971. Cosenza had 60 cm in March 1971.
This is for who thinks that "mediterranean climate" means no chances of snowfall. Heavy snowfalls happen easily even in mild winters because precipitations are often strong and concentrated in the Mediterranean.

Oh April 2003! Very cold month here (for April). We had 15 cm of lying snow in Serres and a low of -6 C. It was impressing. Only 2 times at last decades it happened. The whole North Greece had snow in that month. Florina had -19 C as lowest at that month with 50 cm of snow. Kastoria had -14 C as lowest and had snow too. I remember that I was asking my mum how is it possible to have snow in April and closed schools hahaha! March 1987 was the coldest March in greek weather history. Some regions had 1 m of snow.
30 cm in Lecce? Wow! The city is so stunning and I am trying to imagine it with snow! Wow! Yes here all the weather phenomenons are heavy. It is easy to have 15-20 cm of snow in just one snowfall as normal and at heavier conditions more than 30 cm. There are times that we can have 1 m of snow in just one snowfall. No one can imagine that Athens had one time 80 cm of snow.

talking about heavy snow in mediterranean locales, I believe Perpignan has seen heavy amounts of snow in the past.

I seem to remember April 2003 to be a warm and sunny month up here (like most of that year), but I believe there was some frost in the beginning of the month.

The biggest snowfalls in Thessaloniki happened at 1963, 1988, 2001. The snow φ December 1988 lasted till March in some suburbs of the city!!! Here is a video. Generally in the past snow was common. The city is open to north winds. It snows with NW winds mainly. But from 2006 till now snow decreased very much and became unusual.

In Athens from 2000 till now they experienced some heavy snowfalls like 2002, 2004, 2008. It snowed in 2006, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 but just a little snow and not at the whole city. In Athens snow comes from NE and it is a sea effect snow from Aegean Sea. In 2014 for example they had a thundersnow event.
Here is a video. The past winter (2014-2015) a suburb in Athens (Tatoi, the place where the palace of our old royeal families is located) had 12 days with snowfall!!! A great snowfall in Athens happened at 2002 in January with appproximately 50 cm of snow. Sorry for my mistake about 80 cm. But I think I read it somewhere in the past. I will search about it.

The difference between these cities (the 2 biggest in Greece) is that Thessaloniki can have snow lying at the ground much more days and Athens just have a heavy snowfall and then the snow melts quickly the next days. And in Thessaloniki the snow melts quickly but the city has the possibility and the potential to have more days with snowlying because it is colder.
