Warm/Wet/Windy/Westerly Flow to Become Established Across North Atlantic Again
Andover, MA, 23 January 2017 — For the aggregate February-April period, The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is forecasting above-normal temperatures across most of Europe and western Russia, with the exception of Iberia and the U.K. The relative warmth will be most anomalous across Scandinavia and northwestern Russia.
“As has been the case since October, the bulk of the cold has been east-focused in January, with southeastern Europe getting the worst of it with extreme cold and very heavy snows,” said Dr. Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist with The Weather Company. “We expect that the evolving subseasonal signal should allow for warming/drying across southern Europe as we head into early February, with the strong westerly North Atlantic flow shifting the focus of the wet weather to the U.K. and Scandinavia for at least a couple of weeks. We continue to watch the stratosphere for signs of a polar vortex breakdown that might increase the odds of colder weather across western Europe but simply aren’t seeing anything too get excited about at this time.”
For the February-April 2017 period, The Weather Company is forecasting the following conditions:
February
Nordic region – Warmer than normal, especially south/west
U.K. – Slightly warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west
March
Nordic region – Warmer than normal
U.K. – Slightly colder than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west
April
Nordic region – Warmer than normal
U.K. – Slightly colder than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Warmer than normal east, colder than normal far west
Normality & also within the averages in the southernmost of Spain... Normality in the AEMET station of Motril with a maximum of 19.0ºC and a minimum of 10.2ºC
Málaga 17ºC, Adra 17ºC, Estepona 18ºC... But still chilly also on some southern parts like Almería with just 14ºC or Cádiz with just 13ºC. Huelva is also within the average with 16ºC...
Besides, the north coast from the Cantabrian Sea remains slightly chilly, while the east coast from Girona/Barcelona to Cartagena/Murcia remains quite chilly; but it seems that tomorrow the normality will return. Here in Altea today we had 14.8ºC. For tomorrow is forecasted 18ºC. Temps in Europe:
Seems chilly in the Black Sea & Greece today unless in Crete, with just 9ºC now in Athens. Weather.com predicts in Athens a max. of 6ºC and a min. of 0ºC with rain mixed with snow this next friday. wow!
Till today 23/01 we have daily mean temperature -0,7 C in Serres (-0,4 C from ogimet). Ioannina 0,5 C (-0,02 C from ogimet). Our average high and low are lower from climatic averages too. We experience one of the coldest Januaries in our weather history. We had of course much colder temperatures in the past and much more snow, but this month is strange. The duration of the cold waves, the frequency of low pressure, the stagnation of cold air in our plain etc... made this month very cold and damp. We have never seen a temperature from 9 C and higher, this month, and our average high is 8 C in Serres... This January goes back to '80s and '60s...
