Nice, you guys still avoided any real cold that was stuck in the east... when was the last below average January before this one? 2013? At least you finally got cold though it wasn't particularly severe but a decent deviation from average.what was the lowest temp?

We don't really get severe cold in the UK.. our average absolute yearly minimum temp is about -3/4C and it isn't uncommon for a winter month to record no freezes

December 2015 averaged about 13C/10C, our warmest on record and you'd never see those types of negative anomalies

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the UK has had a pretty cold winter, and it started early. November where I live was freezing, regularly dropping into the minuses overnight. Late December was cold, bottoming out at -4/5C, around -10C in some areas, on a night where I happened to be walking home at 5:00am for about 45 minutes! January has been consistently cold, as was early Feb, but we've definitely turned a corner in the last few days. It's starting to feel very mild.

What are the largest negative anomalies recorded in a winter month?

According to one source, the coldest winter in the instrumental record in UK saw the river Thames frozen for two months, covered in 11-inch thick ice. And the ground in parts of the UK was frozen solid, so no ploughing or planting.

The coldest month on record here was January 1963, which had averages of 0.8/-4.6. The average for January is 8.1/2.3.

Ok, so a negative anomaly of ca 7ºC.

The source claims the coldest winter ever recorded in the UK was 1684 so not in living memory...
The 10 worst British winters ever | The Independent

The same source mention 1962-63 as the third coldest.

No doubt it was extremely cold. Apparently the river has frozen over in London at least 24 times since the 1400's. Whenever it happened the locals used to have "Frost Fairs" on the frozen river. The last time the river froze over was in 1814.

However, although average temperatures may have increased since that cooler period, it also has to be pointed out the flow of the river has been significantly improved since then, largely due to the removal of the Medieval London Bridge. Which is a major factor that will probably ensure that it never freezes again, at least within London, the upper Thames is still prone to freezing.

Germany got its first january below average since 2010.

-2,7c below average (81-10).

The lowest temperatures were primarily in the south. The coldwave lasted for three weeks (!). Coldest temp was -26,3c in reit im winkl, bavaria. In addition to that some parts in bavaria recieved around 100 hours of sunshine, while spots in the north recieved only 45 hours.

January 2017 is the 4th sunniest January since recordings began 1951.
