Been a dry month here so far. No rain since the 28th March.
Explains why my grass hasn't grown much recently.

The SE and East Anglia has one of the shortest grass growing seasons in the country due to summer dryness! The peak time for grass growth is spring and autumn here. Parts of the NE are there as well for a mixture of dryness, cool spring temps and poor soils.

We might have a few rainy days over the next week, but April is usually a dry month and sometimes records barely anything.

It is obvious we have large instability on monthly mean temps compared to there, so we have larger swings in seasonality. What I'm trying to say is do they have as many months way above and way below avg as we can get in winter and spring, or do their anomalies tend to be more muted and consistent?
Surprisingly, our springs have seen a greater positive anomaly over the last 7 years than that of Western Europe, but over the last 3 years the Midwest has seen cooler springs. The East Coast similar anomalies to that of Western Europe (including the UK).

Yeah, even though we have similar annual rain totals to you, we are a little bit wetter than you during summer. I think York gets 7 or 8 more rain days than London during Jun/Jul/Aug, and of course cooler temperatures. That would explain why you get browner grass than we do.

Just checked.
We get 173mm on 28 days.
Heathrow gets 139mm on 23 days.

The soil also plays a major part. I don't know what it's like up there, but here we have clay soil. In winter it is damp or muddy, but from April-October it is as hard as concrete and dusty. Any rainfall just runs off the surface.

The heaths around here are usually found on sandy soil, which is dry and dusty all year round.

I am morbidly excited about the cold blast next week. It might destroy most crops, but I have never experienced anything similar.

Some models show snow cover even in Zagreb and up to 80 cm of snow in Bosnia, while people from the Croatian forum are calling this the strongest cold blast in April since 1929. Record lows will easily be broken (Zagreb's record low for April is a mere -4.4c, if we get a clear windless night with snow on the ground, it will fall easily).

August is the wettest month of the year here in terms of total rainfall. July is only a bit drier than January. Of course, both July and August have fewer rain days and much more sunshine. The rain evaporates much quicker in summer, and the soil is completely dry now.

Last summer the grass browned off a bit during July and August.
