Today's high was 30.5c in my station and we were beaten out by West Estonian stations where that 2014's national record of 33.5c also comes from and even by Tallinn, which got 31.6 c.
Finland recorded the summer record, 32.9C between Rauma and Pori, some 100 km north from here. Turku recorded also our record, 32.6C, in fact the warmest temp since 1998 in the city!
Of course this is dwarfed by the 37.8C (!!!) recorded in Ventspils, Latvia 57N today.

It's on the Baltic coast as well. Insanity. An average summer in that location would be a very cool one by our standards.

that reading is completly perverse. would be interesting to know what the former august record high was in that location.
Riga has an average high of 21C in August (and 21.7C in July - this is 1961-90 normal!) according to Wiki article, but Ventspils is on the outer coast facing the Baltic, and not in the Riga bay, so should be cooler in summer.
The very warm water in the Baltic now is off course central to this record high today

Reason: 61-90 normal

The climate has changed and has done it towards warmth, thus it is no wonder then 1961-90 averages does not reflect the real temperature conditions.
It may be a bit weird that hottest temperature was measured in the westernmost side of Latvia but I have noticed in this summer the warmth has focused around the Baltic sea and as well in Estonia the hottest area has been clearly the western side of country. At the same time eastern side has recorded lower highs. If I am not wrong old Latvian heat record comes from Daugavpils which is also in the south eastern corner of Latvia.
Too bad this is soon over. The warmth/heat should stay with us for a week still, but after a month it's already 5 September, and from that it will be just steep downhill. But hope we can take advantage of the warm sea, and have a mild transition. Not like the one last year when temps were halved in the last week of September.
