Hmmm. Not sure if your Summer comment is related but Fog happens any month. Of course there's different types. I wonder if your fog is because of the rain/moisture from surface. I don't think the layer above is that much warmer than the surface.
I was refering to fog that occurs in the early morning and then burns off. Generally constrained to the valley. It's common in the summer and warm season in general (so sometimes May and September). Your September link is a great example, August might be too. The rest are from other causes. The first few photos from this thread is a good example:
