Why is it that in todays society everyone takes everything as an attack? If I am asked if I prefer Canada or America I am obviously going to criticise one of the countries.

Well, you could say 'I prefer America' rather than 'I prefer America, Canada is boring'.

Well its just like someone asking for my honest opinion on a top and getting all uptight and offended because I said its ugly.

Yes, people get offended by that. Often negative stuff without any context or reason comes off as trolling.

No, you could say you like one better without criticism. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it wasn't to your taste.
