In your town, not NYC, right? I bet the price drop-off is pretty dramatic going out from NYC, huh?
I notice that here all the time, go into town, things cost more, go out, it gets way cheaper. I never can figure out why the value of the US dollar changes so much from place to place.
It's Vappu. 1 May is the International Worker's Day, so it's a celebration for workers, politicians and students. It's also the unofficial "spring carnival" and often considered the only non-religious holiday in Finland. (Midsummer is Pagan.) Politicians hold speeches, political groups march, regular people drink champagne and mead.
May Day is also the date for International Workers' Day by the Socialists and the Commies who want to commemorate the Haymarket affair which occurred in Chicago back in 1886.
