But partly true in any way what you say. Northeastern Europe haven't really experienced extremely much below summer months since the mid 90's. And good for me!
It has something to do with increased high latitude (northern) high pressure blocking patterns which have been setting up more often since around 2007. May 2007 was when this new pattern started to become more evident. Also, with the weaker polar vortex (which seems to be associated with this) and buckling jetstream which is taking a more southerly path over the Eastern Atlantic areas more frequently.
But actually a history of our summers shows that we've always had these periods in our climate, where we go through a run of crap, cool and cloudy summers like this one. Truly good summers are very few and far between. If anyone thinks the summers of 2007-2012 were that bad, the 1960's and early 70's were rather worse, although perhaps not so exceptionally wet and cloudy as some of the months in 2007-2012.
I wonder if those 1960's summers saw the high temp anomalies over Eastern Europe concurrent with the dross over the NW areas. If not, then that would make the whole more modern phenomenon more strange. That there is a clear warming trend of the summers over there, quite rapid in fact, not so evident over here, and possibly even at the detriment to our summers - based on tangible evidence of increased cloud and rainfall in our summers over the last decade or so.

Places like Warsaw, Helsinki, St Petersburg, Moscow. Moscow and Warsaw are 0.1-0.2C warmer than London over the course of the summer, but that shouldn't make a massive difference.

Last year was pretty good.. but hopefully this trend stops!!
I'd like to see high pressure ridged over western Europe with low pressure covering eastern Europe for a change.. let them have a bad summer for once!
In Lapland the change has been very dramatic. 2 below normal summers, one average, and 11 above since 2000.
