Not sure how many we get on an average summer but right now we are having a good one. No wind but lots of lightning and thunder with very heavy rain.

The IE is currently getting thunderstorms and rain, we will probably see them later today, or at night.

How many of you have actually seen a lightning hit the ground at the point of contact? I was caught in a thunderstorm while driving through Ohio a couple years back, the traffic came to a stop (after a harrowing stretch of me fighting to keep the car on the road in terrific cross winds...lol), and I just happened to be looking at the ground next to the road when a bolt hit the ground there, causing a pile of sparks at the point of impact. Neat to see. The thunder was loud enough to feel in my chest too.

It's weird how lightning bolts look almost the same at 50 feet and 5 miles - guess it's an optical illusion.

I saw whipcracking C-G lightning hit the recreational field where I'm exercising right now a couple weeks ago.

How far away were you? Did you see the point of impact, with the shower of sparks? I'd gone out there afterwards to try and find where it hit, could be some molten glass there too.
