All that talk by media over the winter as if it never happened before... all the mis-information they were descending on the public on what it was and why it was happening... I figure I start this thread for educational purposes.

The "Polar Vortex" is INCORRECT to say first of all... it's a "piece" of the vortex that drops down. But even that isn't good to say and can be misleading... Its basically just an upper level low. All you have is an intense trough due to interaction of that old Typhoon which leads to a cut off ULL in the East.

And it doesn't just happen in the winter! It's happening next week....middle of summer. It always happens. Past and Present. Some more pronounced than others.

Steve D wrote a nice summary/rant on it. Hope it helps,.

Is the cut off low that central Europe just got any different from this?

Very true about the media using exciting terms like vortex to attract viewers. But that's nothing new in TV weather forecasting. It's funny to see "meteorologists" reporting on a "devastating tropical storm" with calm seas in the background and people lying on the beach.

Safe to say thenpolar vortex won't even reach NJ.

I don't see a single day below 77 F (25 C) .

Even our lows stay in the mid-upper 60's. Why .

Haha.. I think the word polar vortex was used here a couple of winters ago when it was cold. But then again our media is very sensationalist.

Good point to remind us that it also happens anywhere around the globe.

As far as whats happening in Europe... it doesn't look like there's a connection. Looks "cut off".

On left is current 500mb Heights, notice the Cut Off Low over Europe (if that's where your talking about) there's a broken connection to the pole,,, in fact there's a ridge north of it, it's not even a trough there. But the ULL is keeping things cool there (I assume based on this).

Now look on the right for next week over the U.S... Direct Connect.

Those blues (below freezing at 4500') you'll never find over the U.S or southern Canada. Rare if not ever. But the cool air and below normal anomaly is there in the middle of summer with just the greens

Now look at the 850mb temps back in January. lol. Same concept, different temps.

Here we go. Lol!!! Meteos are getting wild trying to contact these guys with the headlines explaining to them what is a Polar Vortex. A lot of times these articles we read are not written by degree holding meteorologists.
