Well, the snow doesn't come from there, just the cold air.
NZ is a relatively cold oceanic climate for it's latitude, while the UK is a relatively warm one. That's a useful way of thinking, when comparing NZ to the UK.

But again average high is 19c.
No way does it get cold enough for snow in the summer at 3,000 feet there at 40 latitude.
That's a problem for me as well. At night I either have to have the light on and windows closed.. or the other way around.
Same for me as well, but its also because of a "habit" i lived in appartment at a mainroad of my town for 25 years, and with several cars and even trucks passing through in the night it was quite noisy and had difficulty to sleep even with closed windows.
Now i live in a quieter area, only hearing occasional noises from the nearby harbour (the street itself is calm even during the day) but i still prefer to sleep with closed windows unless it is really unbearably hot in the bedroom.

Yeah, I always have my windows open during summer at night though, I love warm temperatures, but for sleeping I prefer a cooler room.. last night I stayed at a hotel without a/c and even though it wasn't hot yesterday, the rooms were quite stuffy and I woke up far too warm
