Anywhere in the western med is cooler than the east, Malaga which is at 36N has cooler SSTs than Nice because of this, but IMO still comfortable.. When you get to Italy and Greece the SSTs are great
I have seen people surfing in Cornwall in November and December before, wearing thick wetsuits mind.
As for beach weather it depends.. If I lived near a beach and it was early March and we got our first warm day of 18C and sunny, I would be straight there to lie in the sun, but definitely not go into the water.
In summer, if it was sunny and above 20C I would probably go to the beach but only to tan.. only after about 24C/25C would it be comfortable to tan and paddle in the sea. I don't like sunbathing above 30C as I end up needing to cool off every 15 minutes
And yet those Californian beaches are packed in the summer, with (shock horror) people swimming in the sea AND without wetsuits!!
They obviously don't think it's too cold to swim there, just like people in the UK will swim at temps below 20C... It is entirely what one is used to, you think it's cold (strange when you claim to be from the UK) but for people in the UK 20C sea temperatures are WARM
Also a large part of the Med sea gets above mid 70's during the summer. Here at the moment the sea temperature is 26C/27C, as it is all around Italy & even the Med coast of Spain & the Balearics are currently at 26C/27C too...
It's lovely that you only enter the sea when it is at hot tub type temperatures, but just remember that not everyone feels the cold as much as your delicate self...
I've said this time and time again yet they STILL insist that people here don't swim in 13c water.
I just moved to Atlanta, and my nearest beach is Savannah, GA. Its over 4 hours away and is experiencing a heat wave by NJ standards (3 consequitive days over 90 F).
I've been on the beach in Chicago at 40C, 35C, 30C, 25C, 20C, 15C, 10C, 5C, 0C, -5C, -10C, -15C, and -20C... Guess which temps I didn't go swimming?
All below 25C I am guessing?
I have only gone swimming below 25C air temps a few times, as we only tend to go the beach here when it is hot, and when we go on holiday it is rarely below a 25C air temperature
