in the last ten years, just one september has been colder than the 1961-1990 average.
That 2006 figure is ridiculous! That's warmer even than the 16.8C averaged out over central England that year, which was the warmest September we'd ever had. Our 1981-2010 average (I don't know 1961-90) for September is higher than yours at 14.0C, so I wouldn't have thought you could possibly beat our warmest on record so late in the year, coastal or not.
What definition of Indian Summer are you using? I go by the American definition, where there is a frost, followed by a return to summer conditions.
The last two Autumns have seen them here, with early frost, followed by a March, that was the warmest month of summer
I tend to call it an Indian summer when temps are above 23c in September and above 20c in October. We hardly get frosts till mid November here, by then anything above 15c would be amazing, sometimes though Pompy hardly gets any frosts what so ever during the year...

Wait we're talking mean temps here right. Cus the average high in Southsea is 19.3 in September, and probs 20 or so if you get into more sheltered spots of the city...
Funny to call 30 C a heatwave, especially if its dry heat.
Dude this is Britain. 30 for some is unbearable, though those people are moany wimps because I like 30c personally! Usually though 30degree heat comes with humidity...
