More than likely it will be like just about every other winter in Western Europe. Temps hardly varying from the average. I'm pretty sure we in North America are in for another brutal winter. The weather of the 80's has returned and this is just the beginning, sadly for me. I like warmth.

Those aren't temp anomalies, that is pressure. Even with that I'll bet their anomalies were nothing like ours. Yeah, maybe in some isolated frost pockets, but W. Europe never sees that wacked anomalies we get near 40F from the mean.

That's true but we have a continental climate while much of Western Europe is oceanic. They won't see day to day swings of 40F. Central Europe, say Germany for example can...

He is an example of London being way below their average December 2010.

Their average high was 8.5F below normal..... While last January our (Polar Vortex) our monthly average max was 5.8F below normal. There mean was 8.1F below normal, ours last January was 7.7F below normal. That deviation from average is pretty damn impressive for an oceanic climate.

Yes, but how often does a month like that happen in the UK vs Chicago? Much more often in Chicago I would bet.

I think it'll begin normal and turn cold later, like the winter '11-'12.

The only recent large anomalies I can remember us having are these

April 2011: 19.7C/8.6C
January 2010: 4.5C/-0.3C
December 2010: 3.9C/-1.5C
July 2006: 28.2C/16.7C

Our largest anomaly was in January 1963, where Heathrow recorded 0.8C/-4.6C. We probably won't see something like that ever again.

April 2011 for me is also pretty impressive:

And here in Greece in January 1963 we had very cold weather at the second half of the month! In Serres we had the record low temperature of -23 C at that month and heavy snowfalls and below freezing temperatures with many icy days! Here is a photo from then in the city centre!

Of course our anomalies are larger, and more frequent. March 2012 was insane here. Average high was 17.3C normal is 8.6C

In March 2013 & December 2010, our average high was 11F below the 1981-2010 average. In February 1986, the average high was 12F below the 1981-2010 average. Not as big as the deviation for March 2012 in Chicago, but still pretty big.

Summer has lower standard deviation here it would seem. July 2006, warmest month on record, average high was 9F above the 1981-2010 average.
