Here's the upcoming weather forecast in Oymyakon, a small Russian town in the far eastern part of Siberia. This is the coldest inhabited place in the northern hemisphere, which records the lowest temperatures on earth outside of Antarctica. This town is located at 63*15 N, 143*9 E at elevation 2400' / 800m. The amazing thing is how consistently cold it remains due to elevation and the nearby mountain ranges that trap cold air in a valley. You can look up this forecast on wunderground by clicking on the map of Russia and scanning the list of cities.

Friday
[Scattered Clouds]
-43° F | -54° F
-42° C | -48° C

Saturday

-43° C | -52° C

Sunday

-49° F | -61° F
-45° C | -52° C

While I love cold weather, that's probably a little too extreme for me to live in. I wouldn't mind though spending a week or so in that type of an environment, just to experience it. Just imagine the fun you could have trying to keep your car going or better yet a semi-truck with a diesel engine.

i just recently saw a report on the place from tv
they use a blowtorch to warm up their cars from beneath and for some odd reason they also add some vodka to the gas tank every time they start to drive their cars

Oh, in that kinda cold I'll bet they often have to use vodka to get themselves going, too.

About 20 years ago I worked for six months on a contract job in western Siberia (in Russia). This was in the area that near their large oil fields that are making Russia a fairly rich energy superpower today. My stay in Western Siberia included all of the winter months, and the coldest temperature I recall was about -35C (-30F). Typically it was around -12 to -25C (+10 to -15F) during winter. It was nowhere near as cold as Oymyakon. I drove all around the ice covered roads in a plain little Lada (Russian car similar to a Fiat), I used an electric block heater for the engine but never had the transmission freeze up. It was a very dry winter there, seldom snowed hard, but there would be days and days where a light dust of snow would fall. That was the humidity in the air freezing and falling to the ground as little crystals of snow.

Did you see the news stories about Russia and their heating system a few years ago? I didn't really understand, but they had a bunch of huge pipes outside the homes and heated many homes at once~sort of like community heating.

Something had been failing and those people were so cold. They showed inside the houses (hovels actually) and their water in their basins would be frozen or the soup on their counters, etc. It was pretty sad and I don't know how they survived it. More then likely, some of them didn't.

So what are summers like in Siberia or don't they really have summer?

I just figured it out and the temp span for my city is 171 degrees. Our record high was 116 and our record low was -55. Not sure what it is for the state, but I do know the record high in the state is 121 and I know the record low is much lower then -55.
