I like to look at graphs, and for a while I was wondering what the relation is of temperature and latitude, particularly on the US west coast since the temperatures are significantly moderated, so I decided to make a graph that shows the mean temp (centigrade) in the hottest and coldest month by latitude, and a separate graph showing the precipitation in mm by latitude for the entire eastern Pacific coast.

Are there any unexpected trends? For me was to see how linearly the coldest month means are, but the hottest ones are not so linear, also, I was pleasantly surprised that Antarctic followed the trend. Also another thing that surprised me was how much cooler the southern hemisphere is than the northern even at the equator. Are there perhaps any other graphs you would like me to make, or you can make your own and share them.

I find it odd that mean summer temps drop off rapidly from 20N to 40N, and then are nearly level from 40N to 60N. However, mean winter temps decline at a roughly constant rate from 20N to 60N.

At around 40N/50N the North Pacific current hits North America and diverges south (California current) and north (Alaska current) so that would explain why the summers are leveled between 40N and 60N and also explain why the summer temps drop rapidly between 20N and 40N because the California current is cold, caused by upwelling. However it is odd that the winters seem to not be affected, I expected that the winters would slightly level, but it doesn't.

Wow, must have been a lot of work! Impressive precip in Buenaventura, especially when your graph shows that it's only 10 degrees from nigh rainless climes.

I would be interested with an East Coast one, but well beggers cannot be choosers.

Here's a graph of mine, didn't really know where to post it. Not the best format for readability, but I can't find the spreadsheet anymore. Box, whiskers and outliers plot would've been better. Gaah!

So, for each month, the lower, thinner dash is the record cloudy month, the thicker one above is the first quartile, the red one is the median, the 4th one the 3rd quartile and the upper dash is the record sunny month. Data is 1949-2016 for Montsouris and 1945-2016 for Nice.

The "return of the westerlies" in late spring / early summer is visible, the sunshinepercentages don't increase anymore after April and the record sunny months are much cloudier. I'm also amazed by the fact that no January had more than 33% sunshine while Febraury managed to reach 60%. In January the sun is still too weak to break the stratus layer during high pressure, whereas in February it is able to burn it off.

Shows that summer is the outlier on the Riviera. It's much sunnier than the rest of the year. I'm amazed by the fact that the cloudiest July is still at 65% (300+ hours). So April isn't the cloudiest month judging by the long-term averages, contrary to the 30-year ones.

Interesting, just so you know I'm currently working on an east coast version, finished North America, and continuing with South America, I'm also going to use data from the Caribbean rather than Central America.

The Pacific precipitation graph is interesting. The higher mid latitude precipitation peak is about the same in both hemispheres; but at tropical latitudes, the southern hemisphere is dry while the northern hemisphere only has a short dry stretch in northern Mexico. Both hemisphere have dry summers equatorward of 40°; around 30° both winter and summer is dry. But south of that the north hemisphere has a high sun wet season getting wetter going further south, while southern hemisphere tropical Pacific coast stays dry.
