It may not be too reliable, I don't know, but I like it.
I think Barcelona and Madrid's stats were based on partly sunny days? Or they used a threshold where they'd only record 90% clear skies as 'clear' (anything below that is "partly sunny")? Or maybe the USA allows a lower percentage such as 70% of blue sky to be "clear"? I'd say New York is lower too, as are most USA cities.
US - 0-30% sunny, 40-70% partly sunny, 80-100% cloudy.
Same old complaint from me ... too vague a criterion. I want measured hours of sunshine, and I don't care if skies are partly cloudy all day yet near maximum sunshine.
I don't think "clear" days should matter, only hours of sunshine. Miami doesn't get a lot of completely clear days throughout the year, would be foolish to not call it sunny.

Definitely agree, clear days are not the best way to determine how sunny a place is. I suppose Miami doesn't get many clear days because of how humid it is and the general convective nature of the climate. No one on earth would call Miami not sunny though, sure it may not get perfectly clear days but it is sunny! Sunshine hours are better and percent annual sunshine.

The majority of our clear days occur in winter and are generally cool and dry.
