It doesn't rain the entire time during the monsoon, but the weather is always unsettled and it can rain at any time. Brief downpours occur frequently. It drizzles almost every day for hours at a time (it will accumulate to 1-1.5 inches per day on average in some cities). A few times in July-August it will downpour for hours and 7-8 inches will fall within 24 hours, while other days very little precip will fall (though it is still humid). The dew point hits 80F almost every day in cities like Ahmadabad and Mumbai.

Here's a Wunderground page where you can see the precipitation data for Mumbai in July 2014. During that month 45 inches of rain fell

Looks like they get relatively little thunder and lightning for all that rain.

On Long Island our precip is distributed fairly uniformly throughout the year. However for 2014, the year-to-date precipitation is 41 inches, and 13.5 of these inches fell on August 13 (at Islip Airport). Hence, in our area, we got approximately 30% of our precipitation for the year in a single day. The amount we get in Dec will be relatively small, so this percentage will change very little.

Of course, this is not typical of the area and can be considered an anomaly, so it doesn't really answer the OP's question; I just posted this because I thought it was interesting.
